277V Hotel EV Charging: What 480Y/277V Service Means for Wall Connectors
Hotels, casinos, garages and large properties frequently have 480Y/277V power distribution. The 277V leg is commonly associated with commercial lighting, so it is reasonable for facility managers to ask whether an EV charger can operate on 277V. The critical issue is the equipment's listed input rating and the electrical system—not simply the voltage available elsewhere in the building.
277V and 480V are not interchangeable
In a 480Y/277V three-phase wye system, the nominal voltage between a phase and neutral is 277V; between phases it is 480V. A single-phase EVSE intended for 277V phase-to-neutral must not be connected across 480V line-to-line unless specifically listed and rated for that separate application. A licensed electrician should verify system grounding, conductor requirements, protection and the actual supply.

Can a Tesla Gen 2 Wall Connector use 277V?
Primecom.Tech's current Tesla Gen 2 inventory packaging is marked 277V single-phase. Tesla's general Gen 2 support page describes compatibility with 208–250V power supplies, so don't assume every Gen 2 version has identical markings. Before installation, a qualified electrician must verify the particular unit's nameplate, official installation instructions and code requirements. The packaging mark is not a substitute for that check.
Can I use the existing lighting circuit?
No conclusion should be drawn from the existence of 277V lighting. EV charging is often a substantial continuous load, and adding it to an existing lighting branch circuit may overload circuits or violate installation requirements. The electrician must evaluate dedicated branch circuits, panel and feeder capacity, appropriate overcurrent protection, conductor ampacity and any applicable permitting.
What about adjustable current?
The Tesla Gen 2 Wall Connector supports installer-configured maximum current for suitable circuits. Tesla's table includes examples such as 32A EVSE output on a 40A breaker, 40A output on 50A, and 80A output on 100A. These examples concern output/current settings; they do not authorize a voltage outside a unit's nameplate rating.
What about several chargers in one garage?
Gen 2 wired group power management supports up to four compatible Wall Connectors, allocating a configured total current budget among vehicles. The group must be properly wired and configured. For larger sites, pay-to-charge networks, or management features, request a commercial EVSE system assessment rather than assuming every Gen 2 site will scale the same way.
Replacement versus a new installation
If a property has an existing Gen 2 Destination Charging location, a properly matched replacement may allow reuse of suitable circuits and mounting after inspection. For a new EV charging project, electrical sizing, load calculations and future expansion should drive equipment selection. Electrician's verification checklist
- Identify the facility's nominal service and the actual branch-circuit configuration.
- Confirm the charger's exact model revision and marked input voltage.
- Check wire, breaker, grounding and circuit capacity for the chosen continuous charging current.
- Verify mounting, cable management and exposure ratings.
- Restore and test any wired load-sharing settings.
